The collection contains Hans Hafemeister's diaries and obituary, and Margaret Hafemeister's papers and film. His diaries concern his experiences on Kiska and his life in Seward. Her papers include an account of her trip to Alaska and her activities as a social worker (1945-1970), a reminiscence of a "floating court" trip on a Coast Guard cutter to southwestern Alaska, and her work in Seward following the 1964 earthquake.

Hans Hafemeister was born in Germany in 1894. He came to the United States in 1914. In 1919, he moved to Alaska and worked as a machinist at a Juneau gold mine. During World War II, he was employed by the Army Corps of Engineers on Kiska Island. After his first wife died, he married Margaret in 1946 and they moved to Seward in 1948, where they lived until 1983. While in Seward, he worked as a machinist and heavy mechanic and served on the Seward City Council (1960-1961). He died in 1985. Margare...
